The Burren (the Irish word for “rocky place”) is an area covering around 400 square miles of limestone hills, terraces and valleys, bordered to the north and west by Galway Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. It is world famous for its geological features - caves and underground streams - and for its archaeological and historical sites - ring forts, megalithic tombs and burial cairns. Its exposed limestone `pavements' support an amazing wealth of plants, from Alpine gentians and mountain avens to Mediterranean ferns and cranesbills.
